What are the Rockefeller Habits and why do they matter to associations?

Rockefeller Habits for Associations

The Rockefeller Habits are an agile, culture-driven model for company strategy that has been used by thousands of companies to grow and scale. Yet, there’s nothing like it in the association industry.

Join Jamie Notter for this online training course on the Rockefeller Habits to learn how to implement culture, strategy, and execution to propel your association to new levels of success and flexibility.

Course Overview

This e-learning course starts off by walking through the Rockefeller Habits and overviewing how they can be used to grow your association. We'll then dive into the three overarching categories one by one to show how associations, membership-based organizations, and nonprofits can use these habits to maximize decision-making, alignment, and efficiency.

Culture habits

The habits focusing on the cultural angle are largely about how to apply core values and culture to daily strategic planning and execution to accelerate your goals and impact. The main concepts include culture visibility, culture alignment, and the role of the "top" of the organization.

This learning module covers actionable takeaways that you can implement right away to ensure:

  • Your executive team is healthy and aligned.
  • Ongoing employee input is collected to identify obstacles and opportunities.
  • Core values and purpose are “alive” in your organization and everyone knows what your culture is down to the behavioral level.

We'll explore how to continuously align your culture with what makes your organization successful and identify and solve areas of culture friction. Strategies to ensure the top of the organization lives the culture, employee purpose and fulfillment, and culture integration with strategy and execution.

Strategy habits

The strategy-focused Rockefeller Habits cover the different ways your association can make your organizational strategy more effective and more connected to all staff. The main concepts include strategy visibility, quarterly focus, and progress visibility.

You'll walk away from this learning module with the knowledge to ensure:

  • Your team can succinctly articulate your organization's core strategic concepts (from long term down to next quarter)
  • Everyone is aligned with the #1 thing that needs to be accomplished this quarter to move your association forward.
  • Your plans and performance are visible to everyone.

In particular, we'll cover employee awareness, specific elements that Harnish covers in Scaling Up (e.g. BHAG - Big, Hairy, Audacious, Goal), and transparency initiatives (e.g. the dashboards and scorecards you need). We'll also discuss how to create meaningful goals by leveraging metrics, leading indicators, and lagging indicators.

Execution habits

These Rockefeller Habits provide clear, actionable information on how to implement culture and strategy for greater impact and success. The main concepts include meetings and information flow, member focus, accountability, and success metrics.

This module of the online training hones in on actionable strategies you can use immediately to ensure:

  • Communication rhythm is established and information moves through your organization accurately and quickly.
  • Reporting and analysis of member feedback data are as frequent and accurate as financial data.
  • Every facet of your association has a person assigned with accountability for ensuring goals are met.
  • Staff can answer quantitatively whether they had a good day or week.

You'll learn widely underutilized information flow processes, communication tools, meeting strategies, accountability initiatives, techniques to empower middle management, and member focus tools including authentic ways to collect member feedback other than member satisfaction surveys

The training course wraps up by discussing how you can put all these habits together by adopting the "quarterly focus."
